Well, I would not want to speak for CLIFF (okay, actually, I do it regularly), but if I were to do such a thing, I think it safe to say that the following dates, which can be found easily here in "68", would come up:

1-20-68
1-22-68
1-23-68
2-14-68
8-22/24-68
10-8/10/12/13/20-68
12-7-68
12-29-68

I can also say that he will provide tips on years prior, and years later, thru about 77.

Oh well, instead of waiting, here are his choices:

WT, just out of curiosity, and being a huge fan of '68 myself, how come you never mention any of the March shows or recommend them? This is not a criticism, BTW, I just wonder why. I really like those shows too, such as the 3/3/68 Haight Street show, and the Carousel and Melodyland shows. This one (and the following night released on The Download Series) are also quite good. Just wondering...

I do enjoy the March '68 shows, but find this period somewhat transitional, as the band is leaving behind the "swing" sound for "bare wires" high-intensity, balls to the wall jamming later in the spring.

Not being a fan of audience recordings, I'm not usually drawn to these March shows, but this Vernon file just might be my very favorite audience recording. The New Potato Caboose is phenomenal...

You are absolutely right, my friend; I must note that CLIFF is NOT so inclined and has set me straight on a few great March shows, but I remain more impressed with Jan and Feb, and find March to be "more of the same" and so just gloss over them, but am sure if Jan and Feb didn't exist, I would point to those as examples.

I really am wedded to the "pre-Live Dead" sets that come to full, early level form during summer, 68 (hence, Aug runs are big with me) thru Oct and Dec. That is where I find the most excitment, and energy...Really enjoy what little we have of the StSt's of June, and the mystery disks, but wish we had even more and then Jun and July would probably get even more attention from me than March!

Thanks for the responses WT and Cliff! I can kind of hear what you mean. So much is missing from that year that its difficult to get a fix on whats happening with the music.
I may have a broader concept of "1968" and eras of Grateful Dead music than most. To my ears "1968" era Dead music really began around October '67 when Mickey was integrated into the band and lasted roughly until June of 1969 when the music took a big turn towards the more mellow country and Workingman's Dead material.

CLIFF does make a good point about the somewhat transitional nature of March below...he knows this stuff well. I agree with that 100%.

Many thanks Will! I will take this weekend to try and get my Head right with the suggestions you, as Cliff's proxy, have provided.

Thanks Cliff, wherever you are.

Why leave out 8-21? The Other One has power:

Yes it does...my bad, just got the dates wrong in my rush...

21-22 are as much fun as 23-24.
